Black Art; Real Stories is an undergraduate literary magazine at the University of Iowa with the goal to produce one physical magazine per year and publish online performances on our website.
Our mission is to provide a safe space for underrepresented and marginalized voices at the through the promotion of creative writing, spoken word, singing, and all other artistic platforms. It is important for minority groups, especially in communities with a much larger number of the majority, to feel they have a place where they can be themselves. We strive to provide unification-- and deepened empathy-- among all people through the cultivation, appreciation, and spread of creativity.
As a literary magazine, BARS does not only look to give a home to fiction and poetry. Our goal is to appreciate all forms of art. Artistic forms such as playwriting, screenwriting, photography, and drawing are all mediums we look to incorporate in our issues. In our online submissions, our goal is to publish performances, such as spoken word poetry, singing, stand-up comedy, even short films. Black Art; Real Stories appreciates all artistic expression, working with the goal to publish varies forms in order to reveal the beauty and diversity of each and every one.
